Sino Group and the Ng Teng Fong Charitable Foundation Support Non-Chinese Speaking Children and Promote Social Inclusion
Partnership with Integrated Brilliant Education to Nurture Children of Different Ethnic Backgrounds
Sino Group (‘the Group’) and its philanthropic arm, Ng Teng Fong Charitable Foundation (‘NTFCF’), have joined hands with Integrated Brilliant Education (‘IBEL’), an educational non-government organisation (NGO), to provide support for students from different ethnic backgrounds in Hong Kong. With a shared vision to educate and empower children, this collaboration includes the provision of teaching resources for a new, inclusive kindergarten, which aims to enhance Chinese language proficiency from an early age and establish programmes designed to bridge educational and cultural experiences, fostering the integration of children with social and economic needs into the community.
Children from diverse ethnic backgrounds often experience educational difficulties, and language proficiency is crucial for overcoming educational challenges and facilitating social integration. IBEL is committed to empowering students from Non-Chinese Speaking (NCS) communities through Chinese language instruction and high-quality educational support, while also prioritising the development of social skills through interactive cultural activities, outings and events. IBEL’s learning centres in Jordan and Sham Shui Po, established in 2015 and 2018 respectively, have supported over 30,000 students.
Mr Manoj Dhar, Co-founder and Chief Executive Officer of Integrated Brilliant Education and School Supervisor of IBEL Rusy and Purviz Shroff Charitable Foundation Kindergarten, said, ‘As we celebrate our 10th anniversary, IBEL enters a new chapter with the establishment of our first kindergarten in Hong Kong. This milestone serves as a testament to our dedication to providing equal learning opportunities and welcoming underserved children from all backgrounds, transcending cultural boundaries. Collaborations and partnerships play a vital role in realising our vision of fostering inclusive education. We extend our gratitude to Sino Group and NTFCF for their invaluable support, enabling us to sustain our transformative work in providing early childhood education. Through this work, we equip children with essential Chinese language skills and also empower the community to come together to make a lasting difference.’
The newly-established IBEL Rusy and Purviz Shroff Charitable Foundation Kindergarten (‘the kindergarten’) has obtained its licence and commenced operations in April 2024, with new recruitment to come in the approaching academic year. To support the acquisition of teaching resources for the kindergarten, NTFCF has donated a total of HK$1.5 million over a span of three years.
In addition to education, Sino Group and NTFCF have been supporting IBEL’s families since 2021 including the provision of care packs, children’s masks and donations during COVID. The organisation’s services have extended past the norm to also include culturally immersive experiences for their children as well, to deepen their understanding of Chinese culture and strengthen their sense of identity in Hong Kong. The experiences include in-depth explorations of the rich traditions and cultural heritage of the Lantau fishing village through visits to the Tai O Heritage Hotel and its surroundings, engaging festive workshops at The Fullerton Ocean Park Hotel during Chinese New Year, and educational visits to the CORAL REEFStoration Centre at Ocean Park.
Ms Nikki Ng, Director of Philanthropy of Sino Group and Director of the Ng Teng Fong Charitable Foundation, said, ‘Promoting social inclusion is an important element of our sustainability principles. We have actively supported organisations that share our vision of empowering minority communities. We greatly appreciate IBEL’s unwavering dedication to serving the non-Chinese speaking community in Hong Kong over the years. We are delighted to work together to foster children’s understanding of Hong Kong and Chinese cultural values in an interactive and enjoyable environment. Personally, I had the pleasure of participating in activities with IBEL’s students, and it was truly heartwarming to see the joy on their faces. It reminds us that even small efforts can have a positive impact in helping these children adapt, foster friendship across diverse backgrounds, broaden their horizons, and feel a greater sense of inclusion.’
Sino Group is committed to embracing diversity and promoting social inclusion, as outlined in its Sustainability Vision 2030. As part of this commitment, Sino Group has collaborated with local NGOs and community partners, including The Islamic Union of Hong Kong, Hong Kong Islamic Youth Association, Khalsa Diwan (Sikh Temple) of Hong Kong, The Kowloon Mosque, WEDO GLOBAL, and The Zubin Foundation, among others. From 2022 – 2023, Sino Group’s efforts have benefited over 25,000 less-resourced elderly, children, youths, and 5,800 families, including those from diverse ethnic backgrounds, through 460 activities. Since 2013, we have been supporting NCS groups through various initiatives. For instance, during the holy month of Ramadan this year, NTFCF reached out to over 2,300 members of Hong Kong’s Muslim community with Iftar meals and also extended support to 40 ethnically diverse students by providing them with eight months of free math tutorials at the Sikh Temple and Wanchai mosque.

Hotel chefs prepare freshly made, nutritious soup, which is then distributed to those in need by dedicated volunteers in collaboration with community partners. Since November 2023, volunteers have delivered soup to over 1,000 elderly individuals who live alone or in pairs across various community districts, including Sham Shui Po, Yuen Long, Tai O and Sai Wan Ho, to share warmth and care during the cold weather.
Ms Nikki Ng, Director of the Ng Teng Fong Charitable Foundation, said, ‘Sino Group and NTFCF continues to commit to caring for and serving the community, with volunteering being an integral part of our culture. We hope to join hands with people from all walks of life to promote inclusivity within our community. The Lunar New Year holds great significance for the Chinese people, and I extend my heartfelt gratitude to my volunteer colleagues for sharing the joy of this festive period and traditional cultural customs with the elderly, underprivileged families, ethnic minority friends, and student volunteers. First Community Living Room launched to improve quality of life of grass-roots families
First Community Living Room launched to improve quality of life of grass-roots families
The Chief Secretary for Administration and Chairperson of the Commission on Poverty, Mr Chan Kwok-ki, officiated at the Sham Shui Po Community Living Room Opening Ceremony on 18 December 2023, to officially start the first project under the Pilot Programme on Community Living Room.
Mr Chan said that the current-term Government has always attached great importance to the well-being of the grass-roots and brought together the strengths of the Government, the business sector and the community to enhance their sense of contentment and happiness. The Pilot Programme on Community Living Room is a new key initiative. As the first flagship project under the programme, the Sham Shui Po Community Living Room provides additional space with diversified facilities and services for grass-roots families to meet their needs in daily lives and social activities, thereby improving their quality of life.
On behalf of the Government, Mr Chan expressed sincere thanks to the Sino Group and the Ng Teng Fong Charitable Foundation for providing the venue as well as the Lok Sin Tong Benevolent Society, Kowloon, as the operator. Other enterprises and district organisations with dedication and capability are also encouraged to join the Pilot Programme on Community Living Room. The Government invites all sectors to act in concert and develop more Community Living Rooms for the benefit of more grass-roots families to build a more caring and inclusive community.
Mr Chan; the Secretary for Labour and Welfare, Mr Chris Sun; the Director of the Ng Teng Fong Charitable Foundation, Ms Nikki Ng; the Executive Director of the Sino Group, Mr Victor Tin; the Permanent Secretary for Labour and Welfare, Ms Alice Lau; the Director of Social Welfare, Miss Charmaine Lee; and the Chairman of the Lok Sin Tong Benevolent Society, Kowloon, Mr Lee Shing-kan, jointly officiated at the plaque unveiling ceremony and listened to Christmas carols performed by mentees of the Strive and Rise Programme, another targeted poverty alleviation project under the Commission on Poverty. They then played games with and presented Christmas gifts to children and parents of over 20 beneficiary households.
Prior to the ceremony, accompanied by other officiating guests, Mr Chan toured the facilities of the Community Living Room, including the reception area, the interview rooms, and the communal living room for doing homework, holding interest classes and group activities, as well as shared cooking equipment and dining area for beneficiary households to cook, dine and mingle. This flagship project provides additional facilities including the self-service laundry, the shower cubicles, the children’s corner and reading room, the sports facilities and the case interview room. Mr Chan and guests visited these shared facilities and services to take a closer look at how they improve the living and community environment of the sub-divided unit households.
“The Chief Executive’s 2023 Policy Address” set out the Pilot Programme on Community Living Room, while embarking on a study to tackle the issue of sub-divided units in the long term. The pilot programme continued to adopt the strategy of tripartite collaboration among the Government, the business sector and the community, under which the business sector provides venues and the Community Care Fund provides funding to commission non-governmental organisations to operate the Community Living Rooms, providing targeted support to sub-divided unit households in the district. The Community Living Rooms offer shared pantries and dining rooms as well as common spaces for doing homework, holding interest classes and group activities, providing sub-divided unit households with additional living space in their respective communities. To strengthen community support for the service targets, the pilot programme also arranges information and talks, and makes referrals to other community services as appropriate. The business sector and local organisations are also approached for in-kind donations (e.g. food or food vouchers) and providing volunteer services (e.g. learning support to students).
Located on 1/F, 188 Fuk Wa Street, the Sham Shui Po Community Living Room will operate for a period of three years and is expected to serve at least 500 sub-divided unit households, with about 80 000 attendances a year.

Sino Group, the Ng Teng Fong Charitable Foundation and Pei Ho (Ming Gor) Charity Foundation Support Social Enterprises to Broaden the “Community Canteen” Service to the Less-resourced
To support less-resourced individuals and families in the community, Sino Group (the ‘Group’) and the Ng Teng Fong Charitable Foundation (‘NTFCF’) jointly launched a six-month meal donation programme in 2021, comprising over 60,000 meal boxes, with the Pei Ho (Ming Gor) Charity Foundation as one of its community partners. This year, Sino Group and the Ng Teng Fong Charitable Foundation join hands once again with Pei Ho (Ming Gor) Charity Foundation to support the opening of a vegetarian restaurant, “Veggies Lotus”, set up as a “Community Canteen” in Tuen Mun. This Community Canteen plans to provide 2,000 free vegetarian meal boxes every month to those in need during the opening, and continue in the spirit of Ming Gor’s well-known social enterprise, “Pei Ho Counterparts”.
“Veggies Lotus”, previously the vegetarian restaurant “Fook Hing Food Shop” in Chi Lok Fa Yuen in Tuen Mun, was established in 2013. It has been serving around 8,000 free vegetarian meal boxes per year to the less-resourced people in the district since 2014 and set up the charitable foundation Lotus Nectar Society Caring Foundation Limited (“Lotus”) in 2021.
‘Ming Gor’ Chan Cheuk-ming in Sham Shui Po, the founder of Pei Ho (Ming Gor) Charity Foundation, seeks to widen participation in community service and is pleased to provide technical support and operational advice to “Lotus” to expand its social enterprise services. ‘Ming Gor’ has also connected “Lotus” and the Cheung family with NTFCF and Sino Group to assist in providing a new restaurant space in Venice Garden, Tuen Mun, at a nominal rent, so that this vegetarian eatery can serve the broader community in Tuen Mun district.
‘Ming Gor’ Chan Cheuk-ming, the founder of Pei Ho (Ming Gor) Charity Foundation, said, “I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to Sino Group and the Ng Teng Fong Charitable Foundation for supporting the Community Canteen concept. I hope we can encourage small businesses in other districts to join as Community Canteens by sharing our experience, including handling meal tickets, identifying beneficiaries, recruiting volunteers and distributing meals. I hope that more districts in Hong Kong will have Community Canteens like ‘Pei Ho Counterparts’ to care for more people in need.”

‘Generations Connect’ Project aims to help boost the well-being of 10,000 elderly
‘Generations Connect’ Project aims to help boost the well-being of 10,000 elderly
HKU medical students to participate in community visits to encourage eHealth literacy improvement of the elderly
e-Health Literacy is closely related to the health and well-being of the elderly. Sino Group and the Ng Teng Fong Charitable Foundation, in collaboration with the School of Nursing, LKS Faculty of Medicine of the University of Hong Kong (“HKUMed”), and charitable organisations and NGOs, launched the ‘Generations Connect’ project (“The Project”) to connect young people and the elderly through community intervention and behavioural coaching. Integrating the concept of e-Health Literacy, with an emphasis on preventive care and self-care management, the Project aims to help the elderly keep abreast of practical e-health tools to improve health. A recent pilot study showed that nearly 70% of the elderly have a low level of e-Health Literacy, and their family happiness index is also relatively low.
The ‘Generations Connect’ project launched a pilot scheme in November last year, arranging workshops for HKUMed nursing students to enhance their skills for better communication with the elderly. They visited over 100 elderly people and conducted surveys and assessments of their physical and mental health. This shows our care for the elderly, while the data will be analysed to understand the elderly’s mobile phone use behaviours and eHealth Literacy levels, as preliminary reference for the Project. The two-year ‘Generations Connect’ project was officially launched earlier this year, expanding beyond nursing students to include students of the School of Chinese Medicine, School of Clinical Medicine, Department of Pharmacology and Pharmacy, and School of Public Health as ambassadors of the Project. Over 1,000 healthcare professional students are expected to participate, providing services to 10,000 elderly people and assisting them in adapting to post-pandemic life and taking care of their physical, psychological, and mental health and wellbeing.
Mr Chris Sun, JP, Secretary for Labour and Welfare, Professor Sophia Chan, GBS, JP, Professor of the School of Nursing of HKUMed, Mr Daryl Ng, SBS, JP, Deputy Chairman of Sino Group and Director of the Ng Teng Fong Charitable Foundation, and Ms Nikki Ng, Group General Manager of Sino Group and Director of the Ng Teng Fong Charitable Foundation officiated the ‘Generations Connect’ sharing session today. Also present at the session were the advisors Dr Lam Ching Choi, SBS, JP, Member of Executive Council of Hong Kong, and Dr Leong Che-hung, GBM, GBS, OBE, JP, who exchanged ideas with representatives from 11 charitable organisations and NGOs, HKU students, and the elderly. The research results of the pilot scheme were also announced during the sharing session.
Mr Chris Sun, JP, Secretary for Labour and Welfare, said: ” Ageing in Place is an important working direction of the Elderly Commission in its blueprint. At present, one-fifth of the local population in Hong Kong is elderly, and there will be one elderly for every four people in the future. Especially in the digital age, teaching the elderly to use smartphones to improve their health is of great importance. This project, supported by Sino Group, closely follows the theme that the government is keen to promote and mobilise young students to care for the elderly and achieve inter-generational integration. Secondly, the project leverages the students’ familiarity with technology, not only teaching the elderly to use technology, but also combining offline services such as visitations to establish a relationship with the elderly. Thank you for Sino Group’s HK$10 million funding to this project; it has inspired 1,000 students to help 10,000 elderly. I look forward to the project’s success and the plan’s expansion in the future to continue contributing to the cause of elderly care.”
Professor Sophia Chan, GBS, JP, Professor of the School of Nursing of HKUMed and Project Director, said, ‘It is our honour to have the support of Sino Group and the Ng Teng Fong Charitable Foundation to provide the school with an opportunity to work with 11 local charitable organisations and NGOs on providing evidence-based health interventions to the elderly. We observed that the elderly with high level of e-Health Literacy have better physical, psychosocial and mental wellbeing. As the elderly population grows, social and medical care demand increases. The pilot study found that among the 70% of elderly persons who completed the two-week follow-up, the rate of low e-Health Literacy dropped from 66% to 56%, providing initial evidence that the intervention by nursing students is useful in strengthening their e-Health Literacy. In addition, the Project received very positive feedback from the students, who demonstrated a higher level of affective empathy, intellectual empathy and self-efficacy after participation. Nearly 90% of them believe that this experience helped them improve their communication skills with the elderly, become better listeners, and gain better knowledge in health and care for the elderly.
Mr Daryl Ng, SBS, JP, Deputy Chairman of Sino Group and Director of the Ng Teng Fong Charitable Foundation, said, ‘We are delighted to work with like-minded community partners on programmes focused on improving the wellbeing of the elderly. I am thankful for the collaboration with The School of Nursing at HKUMed and 11 community partners to launch this meaningful programme and connect young people with the elderly in need. Through this programme, healthcare students provide compassionate care to the elderly with love and professional knowledge, while also facilitating the transfer of wisdom from the elderly to the younger generation and strengthening communication across different generations.”
Ms Nikki Ng, Group General Manager of Sino Group and Director of the Ng Teng Fong Charitable Foundation, said, ‘In recent years due to the COVID-19 pandemic, elderly people have had to stay mostly at home and have been prone to emotional challenges. I am delighted to see this Project effectively assisting the elderly in adapting to post-pandemic life, learning to access pertinent information from the internet, enhancing their emotional resilience, and fostering a positive and energetic lifestyle. It is very encouraging to see caring and enthusiastic young people getting involved in practical training and willing to learn the skills needed to help the elderly, expressing respect, love and care for them.’
According to the survey conducted during the ‘Generations Connect’ pilot scheme, 89% of the 104 elderly respondents with an average age of 80 own smartphones; however, the e-Health Literacy of 69% of the respondents was lower than the ideal. 61% of the elderly spend less than an hour a day on their phones, using them mainly for contacting family members and watching videos. Only 31% used their phones to search for health-related information online. Compared with elderly people with higher e-Health Literacy scores, the preliminary research data of the pilot study shows that those with lower scores had poor mental health conditions (9% vs 16%) and felt lonely (15% vs 21%). On a scale of 0 to 10, those with low e-Health Literacy also had lower family happiness (7.4 vs 8.0) and family communication quality (7.5 vs 7.9). Although there is no statistically significant difference in the analysis at this stage, the initial findings reflect that improving the e-Health Literacy of the elderly could help improve their wellbeing.
Participating charitable organisations and NGOs in this Project include Aberdeen Kai-fong Welfare Association Social Service, Christian Family Service Centre, Evangelical Lutheran Church Social Service – Hong Kong, Haven of Hope Christian Service, Hong Kong Sheng Kung Hui Welfare Council Limited, Hong Kong Young Women’s Christian Association, Methodist Centre, The Hong Kong Society for the Aged, The Lok Sin Tong Benevolent Society – Kowloon, The Neighbourhood Advice-Action Council, and United Christian Nethersole Community Health Service.

Sino Group Sponsors New Clothes and Festive Items to Celebrate the Lunar New Year with Over 10,000 People in Need from Underprivileged Families
With the Lunar New Year approaching, shopping for new clothes and other festive items is a tradition to start the new year. Sino Group (‘the Group’) and the Ng Teng Fong Charitable Foundation (‘NTFCF’) have launched festive care programmes to bring festive cheer to over 10,000 underprivileged people and the Group’s frontline colleagues. In collaboration with more than 30 community partners, this year’s Spring Festival Programme continues to share the warmth of the season with less-resourced families, the elderly living alone, the minorities and the people with varying abilities through home visits and gifting, as well as by supporting people in need to buy new clothes and other items to welcome the Year of the Rabbit.
Mr Daryl Ng, Deputy Chairman of Sino Group and Director of the Ng Teng Fong Charitable Foundation, said, ‘The Lunar New Year is one of the most important festivals in the Chinese culture, but the preparation of new year items may also be a financial burden to underprivileged families. It is believed that wearing new clothes symbolises a new start and fresh hopes for the new year, and thus we sponsor less-resourced families including the elderly and our frontline colleagues to buy new shirts, pants and shoes, hoping that everyone can celebrate an auspicious start to the Year of the Rabbit. We are also thankful to our like-minded community partners and various major chain store operators for their support to bring the underprivileged the season’s blessings.’
Enjoying time with family and friends, sending greetings, going shopping and buying new clothes are festive traditions associated with celebrating the Lunar New Year. This year, the Group invited a number of popular retail chains to join hands in extending joyful greetings, including AEON Stores (Hong Kong) Co., Ltd., Dr. Kong Footcare Limited, Marathon Sports, SKECHERS and UNIQLO. A total of HK$5 million has been donated by the NTFCF to sponsor people in need to purchase new clothes, shoes and other related items in Olympian City, Citywalk and TMT Plaza, as well as participating merchant shops in other locations.
Ms Nikki Ng, Group General Manager of Sino Group and Director of the Ng Teng Fong Charitable Foundation, has accompanied underprivileged families and the elderly to shop in the UNIQLO store at Olympian City in the spirit of hope and renewal. The Group’s employee volunteer team, Sino Caring Friends, has continued to visit various districts to give away seasonal food packs and confectioneries to less-resourced families in preparation for a brighter new year.

With Christmas approaching, Sino Group (‘the Group’) and the Ng Teng Fong Charitable Foundation (‘NTFCF’) have launched a festive programme to reach out to those in need within our community and bring them the season’s blessings. Various activities have been conducted by the Group’s volunteer team, ‘Sino Caring Friends’, with gift packs benefitting about 3,000 underprivileged children and families as well as children and teenagers living in residential care homes. Additionally, as the intense winter monsoon reached Hong Kong last week, warm claypot rice was prepared for underprivileged families and children to provide warmth and show their care.
To celebrate the joy of the Christmas season, special open-top night bus tours are also being arranged for families and children in need, so that they can delight in the vibrant colours of the Christmas lights in Tsim Sha Tsui, including the iconic snowflake pattern that is lighting up the facades of Tsim Sha Tsui Centre and Empire Centre as a part of this exuberant annual festive tradition.
The Group and NTFCF also invited young residents of Children’s Homes to enjoy a Christmas buffet lunch at the Hong Kong Gold Coast Hotel and The Fullerton Ocean Park Hotel Hong Kong. Celebrating with them, Mr Victor Tin, Executive Director of Sino Land Company Limited, presented each a Christmas gift.

‘Generations Connect’ Project Brings Young People Together with the Elderly to Boost Emotional Resilience
‘Generations Connect’ Project Brings Young People Together with the Elderly to Boost Emotional Resilience
In recent years due to the COVID-19 pandemic, elderly people have had to stay mostly at home. Confined to small living spaces for prolonged periods, many senior citizens have been prone to emotional challenges, affecting their mental wellbeing and health. Sino Group (‘the Group’) and the Ng Teng Fong Charitable Foundation (‘NTFCF’), in collaboration with the School of Nursing, LKS Faculty of Medicine, The University of Hong Kong (‘HKUMed’), and charitable organisations and NGOs, announced the launch of the two-year ‘Generations Connect’ Project (‘the Project’) to bring young people together with the elderly in an initiative that will see over 1,000 nursing students providing community intervention and behavioural coaching. Integrated with the concept of e-health literacy, the Project aims to enhance the physical, psychosocial and mental wellbeing of the elderly amid the epidemic. With the target of serving 10,000 elderly people, the Project will commence in November this year with its first phase of pilot services.
HKU Nursing Students Offer Personalised Support to 10,000 Elderly People
Supported by a HK$10 million joint donation from the Group and the NTFCF, the School of Nursing of HKUMed, and eleven charitable organisations and NGOs will be devising the scope of services in tandem to focus on the needs of the elderly aged 65 or above. Coupled with the domain knowledge of HKUMed’s nursing curricula, the Project will also develop an elderly-friendly e-platform and mobile app. Nursing students will build relationships with the elderly and engage them in dialogue to promote health and wellbeing through regular home visits, phone greetings and video conferencing. Self-care tips for COVID-19, health assessments, and mental health education will also be offered to provide timely and appropriate support for those in need. In addition, the Project will organise various activities to encourage them to cultivate healthy hobbies and expand their social circle for the holistic improvement of mental health, lifestyle and overall wellbeing.
Tailored Wellbeing Online Platform for the Elderly
With more and more elderly people becoming familiar with mobile apps for communication, the concept of Mobile Health (‘mHealth’) is being integrated into this Project with a specially curated health benefit-focused e-platform tailored to the needs of the elderly. With personalised support from the nursing students, elderly people can learn to access pertinent information, training materials, games and videos, cultivating their eHealth literacy. With an emphasis on preventative care and self-help health resources, the Project aims at encouraging the elderly to keep abreast of developments in public e-health services moving forward. Those facing difficulties in using the Internet will also be assisted through agile support services.
In addition to support services for the elderly in need, the School of Nursing, HKUMed will leverage two years of clinical data and application cases to study the effectiveness of community interventions for improving the physical and mental health of the elderly in Hong Kong. Training workshops facilitated by charitable organisations and NGOs will also help upgrade the skills of nursing students for better communication with the elderly, while giving them the opportunity to put what they have learnt into practice.
Professor Sophia Chan Siu-chee, the School of Nursing of HKUMed, said, ‘The School and I are honoured to receive this generous donation from Sino Group and the Ng Teng Fong Charitable Foundation, and for the opportunity to work with eleven local charitable organisations and NGOs to enhance the health and wellbeing of the elderly, as well as their capability of using electronic devices in communication. As the elderly population grows, demand for social and medical care increases. The School of Nursing proactively offers various intervention activities to enhance communication with the elderly and enable early assessment of their physical and mental health, providing timely support and improving the elderly’s skills in coping with the challenges of life, and enhancing their wellbeing and quality of life. HKUMed’s School of Nursing offers comprehensive training in nursing, preparing students to serve the community and safeguard public health.’
‘The young nursing students are dynamic and radiant, and ready to unleash their creativity as they design effective means of communication with the elderly under this Project, which blends curriculum teaching and research. In so doing, the students may contribute not only to building closer ties across generations, but also promoting the physical and mental health of the elderly. This Project aims at helping the elderly adopt a healthy lifestyle and increase their health awareness using a preventive approach, which aligns with the Government’s policy of strengthening primary health care in the community. It will prepare and highlight students’ roles as health coaches in promoting elderly health in the community,’ added Professor Chan.
Mr Daryl Ng, Deputy Chairman of Sino Group and Director of the Ng Teng Fong Charitable Foundation, said, ‘Sino Group and the Ng Teng Fong Charitable Foundation are delighted to partner with The School of Nursing of HKUMed, The University of Hong Kong and eleven community partners and NGOs in this meaningful programme. We believe that the youth of Hong Kong is full of compassion and care for others, and with the ageing of the Hong Kong population, a particularly vulnerable group are the elderly. Through pairing up youth volunteers with the elderly in need, we hope that a beneficial synergy can come about allowing the elderly to be cared for and the youth volunteers to learn important life lessons.’
Participating charitable organisations and NGOs in this Project include Aberdeen Kai-fong Welfare Association Social Service, Christian Family Service Centre, Evangelical Lutheran Church Social Service – Hong Kong, Haven of Hope Christian Service, The Lok Sin Tong Benevolent Society, Kowloon, Methodist Centre, The Neighbourhood Advice-Action Council, The Hong Kong Society for the Aged, Hong Kong Sheng Kung Hui Welfare Council Limited, United Christian Nethersole Community Health Service, and Hong Kong Young Women’s Christian Association.

Sino Group and Ng Teng Fong Charitable Foundation Launch Summer Programme to Provide Immediate Support for the Community
10,000 drink cards, meals and ice-cream are being provided to help the community cope with the hot days
Sino Group and its philanthropic arm, the Ng Teng Fong Charitable Foundation (NTFCF), have launched a summer programme in collaboration with community partners to provide immediate support for the less-resourced amid the heatwave.
Sino Caring Friends, the Group’s volunteer team, as well as community partners J Life Foundation and Pei Ho (Ming Gor) Charity Foundation joined hands in distributing 3,000 cans of chilled Yeo’s drinks to people living in Shamshuipo on 22 July 2022 to help them stay hydrated amid the high temperature, in particular with the ‘Great Heat Day’ (23 July 2022) approaching.
In addition to handing out on the street, the Group and the NTFCF are distributing 200,000 cans of Yeo’s drinks to people living in sub-divided units in collaboration with 20 community partners, who will distribute 10,000 drink cards imprinted with a dedicated QR code, each entitling the cardholder to 20 cans of drinks from designated vending machines in various districts in Hong Kong. Drinks can be collected from now until 31 October 2022. To further help people living in sub-divided units to cope with the hot weather, electric fans will be provided through community partners upon request.
People’s livelihoods have been greatly affected by the pandemic, especially the less-resourced. The Group and the NTFCF are starting the second year of the meal donation programme, through which 10,000 nutritious meals prepared by the Pei Ho (Ming Gor) Charity Foundation in Shamshuipo will be provided for the needy individuals and families. The meals are carefully designed and feature dishes suitable for summer, and completed with ice-cream, making them particularly appealing on hot days.
Mr Daryl Ng, Deputy Chairman of Sino Group and Director of the Ng Teng Fong Charitable Foundation, joined Sino Caring Friends in distributing the refreshing chilled beverages in Shamshuipo on 22 July 2022. ‘Like many other places, Hong Kong is facing an extremely hot summer with the “Very Hot Weather Warning” issued more frequently. By serving chilled drinks and providing cooling products on very hot days, we hope to show our care and concern while reminding them to stay hydrated and safe amid the hot weather,’ remarks Mr Ng.
‘We are thankful to J Life Foundation, Ming Gor and our community partners, who join us on this summer programme to provide much-needed support for the community, and to our Sino Caring Friends for their tireless services. We look forward to working with more partners to support those in need,’ adds Mr Ng.

NTFCF Launches Cultural Appreciation Programme to Palace Museum in Beijing
To deepen appreciation of Chinese culture and foster a sense of identity, the NTFCF is launching the Beijing-Hong Kong Cultural Appreciation Programme, through which 50 local university and college students will be hosted to the Palace Museum and other historic buildings in Beijing per year. The Programme will entail learning workshops with museum professionals at the Palace of Prolonging Happiness (Yanxi Gong) on heritage research and artefact conservation. Through this Programme, the students will be able to experience first-hand Lingzhao Belvedere of Yanxi Gong, the only Western-style architecture in the Forbidden Palace, and appreciate how traditional Chinese form of arts and architecture blends with Western style, while learning about management of relics and intercultural dialogues that celebrate harmony and diversity.
Mr Bernard Charnwut Chan, GBM, GBS, JP, Chairman of the Hong Kong Palace Museum Board, extends his appreciation to the meaningful undertaking, ‘The Hong Kong Palace Museum, with cultural resources belonging to the community of Hong Kong, is committed to promoting the study and appreciation of Chinese art and culture in addition to advancing international partnerships. We are appreciative of the kind effort by the Ng Teng Fong Charitable Foundation and Greater Bay Area Homeland Youth Community Foundation to bring our young generations to experience national treasures and culture first-hand. We look forward to more meaningful partnerships with more like-minded partners.’
Mr Kenneth Fok, JP, Executive Vice Chairman of the Greater Bay Area Homeland Youth Community Foundation and LegCo member representing the Sports, Performing Arts, Culture and Publication sector, says, ‘The opening of the Hong Kong Palace Museum not only strengthens the position of Hong Kong as an East-meets-West centre for international cultural exchange which is supported by the National 14th Five-Year Plan, but also facilitates the cultural and art development between Hong Kong and the Mainland, including the Greater Bay Area. Through this programme, the Foundation hopes to deepen Hong Kong youth’s understanding on the history and culture of our nation.’
Mr Daryl Ng, SBS, JP, Director of the Ng Teng Fong Charitable Foundation and Chairman of the Greater Bay Area Homeland Youth Community Foundation, shares, ‘We are honoured to work with Hong Kong’s world-class museum to promote the appreciation of Chinese arts and culture. This is particularly meaningful as we celebrate the 25th anniversary of the establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region this year. We hope that by providing our young people with the eye-opening opportunities to experience first-hand the national cultural treasures, they can expand their horizons, appreciate the national culture and foster a sense of unity.’

Sino Group and Pumen Foundation Develop ‘Wellness Lodge’ Transitional Homes to Alleviate Short-term Housing Needs of Underprivileged Families
Ng Teng Fong Charitable Foundation to Offer Scholarships in Support of Children’s Talent Development
Sino Group (the ‘Group’) announced that it is leasing a parcel of seaside land in Tsing Lung Tau, Tsuen Wan, New Territories, at nominal rent for the development of the transitional housing project, ‘Wellness Lodge’, in collaboration with charitable organisation Pumen Foundation Limited (‘Pumen Foundation’). Aligning with the Group’s vision of ‘Creating Better Lifescapes’, the project promotes green features and wellness in its design and planning while fulfilling the needs of the underprivileged, to facilitate a healthy living experience to beneficiary families and children.
Located at a seaside lot in Tsing Lung Tau, Castle Peak Road, the site area is approximately 19,000 sq. ft. and the project will enjoy panoramic views of the stunning landscape of Kap Shui Mun Bridge, promoting a healthy lifestyle. ‘Wellness Lodge’ is expected to be completed with related services in operation in Q4 of 2023, ready for eligible families to move in. The operation period will be about five years.
Amenities to Promote Physical and Mental Health
‘Wellness Lodge’ features a number of amenities that promote physical and mental health. These include the first multi-functional activity room incorporating STEAM elements, a farming area referencing the Group’s integrated green community project ‘Farm Together’, free Wi-Fi network, as well as vocational support for residents, such as job matching and training, among others. Based on children’s needs, the Group will also work with Pumen Foundation to offer a variety of courses including STEAM-related and coding courses to facilitate talent development, while volunteers of Sino Caring Friends will visit and play with the kids to share moments of caring companionship.
To understand the needs of underprivileged families, the Group and its philanthropic arm, Ng Teng Fong Charitable Foundation (‘NTFCF’), will continue to work with Pumen Foundation when ‘Wellness Lodge’ begins operation and provide HK$5,000 per academic year to each child of the residents via the Ng Teng Fong Scholarship, to encourage talent development beyond academic studies. In addition, NTFCF will offer financial support for Pumen Foundation to organise interest classes and courses for the families and their children.
Mr Daryl Ng, Deputy Chairman of Sino Group and Director of the Ng Teng Fong Charitable Foundation remarks, ‘Today is Children’s Day and we would like to wish all Hong Kong children happiness and health. A good living environment is conducive to the wellbeing and growth of children. By providing a happy and healthy home at Wellness Lodge, we hope that underprivileged children and their families can enjoy a safe, healthy and green lifestyle during their stay here. With amenities like the multi-functional activity room incorporating STEAM elements and the green farming area, Wellness Lodge will be a place bringing hope to the children and helps unleashing their potential and creativity. We would like to thank our partner, Pumen Foundation, for their wonderful support in making the meaningful project a reality.’
Mr Lee Yuet-man, MH, Chairman of Pumen Foundation said, ‘Some underprivileged families in Hong Kong can only afford to live in subdivided flats, yet the living environment there has a great impact on the development of children. By developing this transitional housing project with Sino Group, we hope to provide a well-equipped temporary residence with a beautiful environment to improve their living conditions and encourage upward social mobility. We would like to thank Sino Group for their professional technical support on project preliminary work to facilitate approval procedures and project commencement, which will enable us to start providing services to families in need as soon as we can.’
Catering to the Needs of Elderly and Physically Challenged Persons
‘Wellness Lodge’ will be built using modular integrated construction (MIC). The building will be three-storeys high and is expected to provide 85 units for underprivileged families at nominal rents. Measuring between 146 to 197 sq. ft., each unit can accommodate families of one to three, while families in need can be accommodated in adjacent units. Each unit will comprise an open kitchen, a private bathroom, and a living and dining room. The needs of elderly residents and the physically challenged will also be taken into consideration. The project is conveniently located on Castle Peak Road with multiple bus and minibus lines that allow for direct travel to and from various locations in the city. Residents can obtain daily necessities within a 10-minute walk.
The Assessment Committee for the ‘Funding Scheme to Support Transitional Housing Projects by Non-government Organisations’ under the Transport and Housing Bureau agreed to subsidise the project in late February. Pumen Foundation will be in charge of the building work, selection of residents, daily operations, etc., via a committee composed of representatives from different sectors.

Sino Group and Ng Teng Fong Charitable Foundation Step Up COVID Support for Children and the Elderly 20,000 oximeters, 250,000 child-sized masks and cash donated to support operational needs of NGOs to deliver community services
Sino Group and Ng Teng Fong Charitable Foundation Step Up COVID Support for Children and the Elderly 20,000 oximeters, 250,000 child-sized masks and cash donated to support operational needs of NGOs to deliver community services
Sino Group and its philanthropic arm, the Ng Teng Fong Charitable Foundation (NTFCF), are stepping up support for children and the elderly in combating COVID-19. The Group and NTFCF are donating 20,000 oximeters to residential care homes and elderly living alone in collaboration with its community partners, including the Hong Kong Sheng Kung Hui Welfare Council (HKSKHWC), Hong Kong Family Welfare Society, Caritas Social Work Division and Sik Sik Yuen Social Services Coordination Office. Distribution is slated for the week of 14 March 2022.
Among the 20,000 oximeters, 3,000 will be distributed by the HKSKHWC to nine elderly homes and three rehabilitation centres it supports as well as private elderly homes that they work with. The Group and NTFCF are also donating HK$1 million to HKSKHWC to support the operational needs of elderly homes and rehabilitation centres under its auspices.
Oximeter is a handy medical device measuring the user’s blood oxygen level and pulse rate, which are important physiological parameters for health assessment. It is useful for detecting irregularities in respiratory cycles and early signs of deterioration for prompt medical care.
Additionally, the Group and NTFCF are distributing 250,000 child-sized masks to children from underprivileged families and ethnic minorities in collaboration with community partners including the Hong Kong Islamic Youth Association, the Pakistan Islamic Welfare Union, the Hong Kong Nepalese Federation and Society for Community Organization.
Mr Daryl Ng, SBS, JP, Deputy Chairman of Sino Group and Director of the Ng Teng Fong Charitable Foundation, remarks, ‘The health and well-being of children and the elderly have been significantly affected by the pandemic, and the elderly segment is particularly vulnerable with the lowest vaccination rate. The oximeter is a useful monitoring tool providing valuable information on health conditions, enabling earlier identification of irregularities and more timely medical care for elderly residents and saving lives. It is a convenient device that allows elderly users to monitor their oxygen levels many times a day if they are feeling unwell. Blessings to Hong Kong.’
The Group is committed to supporting the community in combating the unprecedented pandemic. In addition to donating more than 280,000 rapid antigen test kits, 500 remote monitoring systems to residential care homes and essential supplies to the less-resourced, the Group seeks to help alleviate the stress on the public health system by donating to the Hospital Authority and the Hong Kong Children’s Hospital to support paediatric services, and converting a Sino Group hotel into community isolation facilities for patients with no or mild symptoms through the CIF Hotel Scheme. Other supports include providing short-term accommodation for DSE candidates and families living in subdivided units, which are not suitable for quarantine, providing a series of online learning courses with the Ocean Park for 10,000 children from underprivileged families about marine biodiversity while they stay at home

Sino Group and Ng Teng Fong Charitable Foundation Donate HK$5 Million to Support Underprivileged Children Amid the Pandemic
The fifth wave of the COVID-19 epidemic in Hong Kong is very challenging with children’s health a particular concern for parents. Sino Group and its philanthropic arm, the Ng Teng Fong Charitable Foundation Limited (‘NTFCF’), today announced a donation of HK$5 million to the Hospital Authority to provide support to the Paediatric services in the public hospitals, including the Hong Kong Children’s Hospital. To step up our support to the underprivileged children and their families confined to home in the fight against the epidemic, the Group is also collaborating with non-governmental organisation to provide temporary accommodation for underprivileged families living in subdivided units which are not suitable for isolation. Online learning courses will also be offered to children confined to home in the fight against the epidemic.
Through the HK$5 million donation to the Hospital Authority, the Group and NTFCF wish to provide appropriate support to the Paediatric services concerned, such as purchase of medical equipment, medicines, emergency assistance and anti-epidemic supplies, with the aim of supporting the hospital services for child patients and their families.
Supporting Underprivileged Families in Need with Temporary Accommodation
In addition, in view of the needs of underprivileged families living in subdivided units and unable to quarantine at home due to neighbouring infected households, the Group is collaborating with the Society for Community Organization to support families living in subdivided units and in urgent need of relocation to a safer environment. The Group is also collaborating with the Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups to provide short-term accommodation for this year’s Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education Examination candidates who live in subdivided units. The funding will allow them to take up temporary residence at the Leadership Institute (former Fanling Magistracy) to support their academic and emotional needs.
Collaborating with Ocean Park to Provide Online Learning Opportunities
In line with the Government’s disease prevention measures, students will start their summer holidays early in the fight against the pandemic. The Group is joining hands with Ocean Park to offer a series of online learning activities to 10,000 children aged three to eight during this period. The four-week course will introduce the concept of biodiversity and animal knowledge through storytelling and games, allowing children from underprivileged families to benefit from these interesting activities while staying at home.
Mr Daryl Ng, Deputy Chairman of Sino Group and Director of the Ng Teng Fong Charitable Foundation, said ‘The COVID-19 situation remains severe, and it is of utmost importance that we provide appropriate assistance to underprivileged children and their families during this critical moment. We are thankful to the Hospital Authority, the Society for Community Organization, the Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups and Ocean Park Hong Kong for the prompt arrangements to take care of our future generation, among others, to offer comprehensive support to the child patients, children infected with the Conoravirus Disease, and children staying at home amid the pandemic, and their family members. We shall continue to support the Hong Kong Government on its work to combat the epidemic. I am confident that with the close collaboration of all sectors, and with the community coming together to protect themselves, their families, and the community, we shall return to normality soon.’
The fifth wave of the pandemic has brought unprecedented challenges to Hong Kong. The Group has been providing multi-faceted support to the underprivileged through collaborations with various partners, including the donation of 280,000 rapid antigen test kits to the underprivileged through the Democratic Alliance for the Betterment and Progress of Hong Kong and the Sino volunteer team, distribution of 500 Belun® remoVital remote monitoring systems to care homes, and conversion of the Group’s hotel into a community isolation facility. At this moment in time, all support measures count. Earlier, fresh organic harvests from Farm Together, the Group’s integrated community project, were shared to community partners. Sino Hotels also warmed the hearts of 2,000 elderly with hot soup, through its ‘Hearty Soup Delivery Programme’ this past winter.

Sino Group and Ng Teng Fong Charitable Foundation Partner with HKCSS and Social Welfare Department to Distribute 500 Belun® remoVital Remote Monitoring Systems to Care Homes to Support Combating Covid-19
Sino Group and the Ng Teng Fong Charitable Foundation, its philanthropic arm, are partnering with the Hong Kong Council of Social Service (HKCSS) and the Social Welfare Department to distribute 500 Belun® remoVital remote monitoring systems to residential care homes. The systems will facilitate efficient monitoring and effective follow-ups of elderly and people with disabilities living in residential care homes and with mild COVID-19 symptoms. Distribution has commenced, and is on track for completion by mid-March 2022.
Belun® remoVital remote monitoring system, a Hong Kong home-grown innovation, is a remote, real-time monitoring system comprising FDA 510(k)-cleared Belun® Ring, body temperature probe and a communication hub that enables real-time monitoring of health conditions of patients. It measures and monitors the user’s pivotal physiological parameters including blood oxygen saturation, pulse rate and body temperature. Thanks to its internet-enabled features, real-time alerts of parameters exceeding pre-set thresholds will be issued, enabling prompt actions for patients with abnormal parameters. It also helps to streamline carers’ monitoring routines so that they can better support the patients.
Mr Bernard Chan, GBM, GBS, JP, Chairman of the HKCSS, remarks, ‘The fifth wave of the COVID-19 epidemic situation is particularly challenging, many residents of the residential care homes for the elderly and people with disabilities who have tested positive are required to stay in the care homes. The care homes make the best effort to provide appropriate care for these residents while preventing infection among other residents or staffers. The remote health monitoring system helps the care homes monitor patients’ health conditions, enabling them to provide timely support to the patients when necessary, and better protects the health of residents. I would like to extend my gratitude to Sino Group and the Ng Teng Fong Charitable Foundation for their generous donation of 500 Belun® remoVital remote monitoring systems to benefit more care homes and their residents, and Dr Lam Ching-choi, Chairman of the Elderly Commission for supporting and driving the programme, and the Social Welfare Department for assisting in informing residential care homes for the elderly and people with disabilities of this programme and the relevant application method.’
Mr Daryl Ng, SBS, JP, Deputy Chairman of Sino Group and Director of the Ng Teng Fong Charitable Foundation, says, ‘With the surging numbers of confirmed cases, there is enormous pressure on our public health system as well as care homes where many residents have to undergo quarantine on-site and need medical care. With efficient remote monitoring, carers can support residents in a timely manner. Every support counts as we combat COVID-19 as one community. I would also like to appeal to all, in particular the elderly, to get vaccinated as soon as possible after seeking medical advice.’
Ms Lydia Leung, CEO of Belun Technology Company Limited, says, ‘We are pleased to collaborate with Sino Group, the Ng Teng Fong Charitable Foundation, the Hong Kong Council of Social Service and the Social Welfare Department to help the community fight the pandemic. Belun®️ Ring monitors user’s blood oxygen saturation (SpO2). Monitoring SpO2 within 93% can identify “silent hypoxia”, and this becomes critical to avoid deterioration. We hope the remote monitoring system can help identify quarantine residents who need special and timely attention and alleviate the pressure of care givers.’
The Ng Family, the majority shareholder of Sino Group, is an early investor of Belun Technology Company Limited as it supports innovations and technological development of Hong Kong and the Greater Bay Area to build a better community.
In a further effort to support Hong Kong’s development into an international innovation and technology hub, Mr Daryl Ng has founded the Hong Kong Innovation Foundation (HKIF), a holistic innovation ecosystem. HKIF encompasses a wide range of platforms to serve different age groups and sectors; for instance, Go Code project provides complimentary coding classes for primary school students, and OC STEM Lab at Olympian City provides exposure to STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics), Sino Inno Lab supports start-ups and technology companies by providing a sandbox platform and facilitating co-creation.

Sino Group, Ng Teng Fong Charitable Foundation and Democratic Alliance for the Betterment and Progress of Hong Kong Collaborate to Donate 280,000 Rapid Antigen Test Kits to the Underprivileged in Support of Pandemic Prevention
With the severe COVID-19 situation, there is surging demand for COVID-19 testing in the community. Sino Group (the ‘Group’) and Ng Teng Fong Charitable Foundation (‘NTFCF’) are donating 280,000 sets of rapid antigen test kits, and the 18 district branches of Democratic Alliance for the Betterment and Progress of Hong Kong (‘DAB’) together with the Group’s volunteer team will help distributing the test kits to the underprivileged starting next week, to combat the pandemic.
Hon TAM Yiu-chung, GBM, GBS, JP, Hong Kong Special Administrative Region deputies to the National People’s Congress remarked, ‘The fifth wave of the pandemic has brought unprecedented challenges to Hong Kong, affecting all walks of life, especially the underprivileged. At this critical moment, I would like to express my heartfelt thanks to Sino Group and NTFCF for their concerted support for underprivileged people in the community. I believe that as long as every one of us works together, the pandemic will end soon and everyone will be able to return to a normal life again.’
Mr Daryl Ng, SBS, JP, Deputy Chairman of Sino Group and Director of the Ng Teng Fong Charitable Foundation, said ‘The new wave of the pandemic is particularly challenging. Recently, there is a surge in demand for COVID-19 testing in the community. The distribution of Rapid Antigen Test kits hopes to bring extra protection under the current preventive measures. We would like to thank DAB for their prompt arrangement, together with the colleagues from Sino’s volunteer team, who are working to deliver the test kits to people in need within the shortest time. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank the medical professionals, frontline and district volunteers who have been working tirelessly to keep our community safe during this period. We encourage the community to come together to fight COVID-19 together, and the best way to achieve this is through community-wide vaccination. For those yet to be vaccinated, I appeal to you to seek medical advice and get vaccinated as soon as possible.’
Ms Starry Lee, SBS, JP, Chairwoman of Democratic Alliance for the Betterment and Progress of Hong Kong, remarked, ‘I would like to thank Sino Group and NTFCF for their timely support to help people in need access rapid testing kits at home. Not only can this alleviate the additional financial burden from purchasing COVID-19 test kits, but it can also lower the chance of crowds gathering due to the long queues outside COVID-19 testing centres and relieve the pressure on these facilities. Volunteers from the DAB will join hands with Sino Caring Friends to deliver the test kits to the underprivileged as early as next week.’

200 Lucky Draw Winners Received Elderly Prize
Over 50,000 Gift Packs Being Donated to Vaccinated Elderly
Ng Teng Fong Charitable Foundation Limited (‘NTFCF’), the philanthropic arm of Sino Group (the ‘Group’), encourages COVID-19 vaccination among elderly citizens in Hong Kong. In the run up to the festive season, NTFCF is pleased to share the happiness with 200 winners of the Elderly Prize under the Lucky Draw who are vaccinated Hong Kong residents aged 70 or above, and present the prize with a value of HK$10,000 to each of them. In addition, NTFCF is supporting ‘Hong Kong Community Anti-Coronavirus Link’ by sponsoring over 50,000 gift packs for elderly residents who have been vaccinated in public hospitals or COVID-19 Mobile Vaccination Stations, as well as offering Health Talks and consultation sessions that provide greater understanding for COVID-19 amongst the elderly community.
In attendance at the Lucky Draw prize presentation ceremony held recently, Professor Sophia Chan, JP, Secretary for Food and Health congratulated all winners and thanked them for protecting themselves as well as the wider community through getting vaccinated. ‘Although the pandemic situation in Hong Kong is stable, the new Omicron variant is a threat to us. People must get vaccinated as soon as possible to protect themselves and others. Elderly people are more likely to encounter complications and death after becoming infected with COVID-19, it is therefore important for our seniors to receive the vaccination as soon as possible, and further enhance protection through getting a third jab,’ she said.
Mr Daryl Ng, Director of NTFCF says, ‘I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the Government for their tremendous efforts in effectively keeping the epidemic under control in Hong Kong, with peoples’ livelihoods continuing to improve, and the economy recovering. With the higher vaccination rate in Hong Kong, it will foster favourable conditions for resuming quarantine-free travel in future. However, the vaccination rate among elderly citizens is relatively low, and it is very important to encourage more elderly to be vaccinated. My two grandmothers are aged 92 and 101, and they have got vaccinated and resumed a normal and happy social life. To protect themselves and loved ones, I encourage all elderly citizens to become vaccinated as soon as possible, after seeking medical advice.’
200 prizes for vaccinated residents aged 70 or above, with the oldest being a 98-year-old
The winners of the 200 prizes of pre-paid cards, with a value of HK$10,000 each, all being vaccinated Hong Kong residents aged 70 or above, were randomly drawn on 7 December 2021 by a specialist computer system designed by an external service provider, Ernst & Young Advisory Services Ltd.
Among the 200 winners, around 20% are 80 years old or above, with the oldest winner being 98 years old. Winners attending the prize ceremony shared that personal protection is a key reason for becoming vaccinated, and expressed desire to be healthy enough to socialise and spend time with friends and loved ones, without putting them at risk. Others shared that they received the vaccination in hope that it would facilitate them to travel to Mainland China or overseas in coming months, so they can reunite with their families and to explore new places.

Ng Teng Fong Charitable Foundation and The Fullerton Hotels and Resorts Provide Educational Support for Children from Less-Resourced Families through the Launch of e-KidsExcel@Nee Soon
SINGAPORE, 10 JULY 2021 – The inaugural e-KidsExcel@Nee Soon programme, a corporate social responsibility initiative sponsored by the Ng Teng Fong Charitable Foundation (NTFCF), the philanthropic arm of Sino Group, and The Fullerton Hotels and Resorts was launched in March 2021. The e-KidsExcel@Nee Soon programme is organised in partnership with Nee Soon Group Representative Constituency (GRC) and Viva Kids, an educational social enterprise that aims to provide high-quality academic enrichment to primary level students.
The official launch of the programme on 17 March 2021 at Yishun Primary School was graced by Guest-of-Honour Minister K. Shanmugam (Minister for Law and Home Affairs and Member of Parliament for Nee Soon GRC).
Expressing his support for the programme, he said “We want to help our children achieve their fullest potential, regardless of their different starting points in life. COVID-19 forced us to move to home-based learning. There was a national effort to make sure that children from lower income families were not disadvantaged. In Yishun, in addition to the national effort, we have e-KidsExcel@NeeSoon to help the children, close the digital gap. Every child should be given opportunities for a decent chance to succeed in life, and e-KidsExcel makes it possible for these kids. They have benefited tremendously from the programme. e-KidsExcel would not have been possible without the generous support from our sponsors, the Ng Teng Fong Charitable Foundation, The Fullerton Hotels and Resorts, and Viva Kids Pte Ltd.
Ms Jeanne Ng, Director of the NTFCF and The Fullerton Hotels and Resorts commented, “Sino Group, the parent company of The Fullerton Hotels and Resorts celebrates its 50th anniversary this year and we hope to continue our efforts in building strong and vibrant communities. We also want to develop the aspirations of youths for a better future. Through the e-KidsExcel@Nee Soon programme, we are delighted to play a part in helping students, parents and teachers adapt to the new learning arrangements and make good use of technology to learn at home amid the current situation.”
Both the NTFCF and The Fullerton Hotels and Resorts are committed to nurturing the younger generation and developing their strengths in the fields of innovation and technology. The two year-long developmental programme is designed to support the educational development of 110 under-resourced children from Naval Base Primary School, North View Primary School and Yishun Primary School who are on the Ministry of Education’s Financial Assistance Scheme. Through this initiative, the NTFCF and The Fullerton Hotel Singapore, together with Viva Kids and the partner schools, aim to provide the children with the resources and exposure they need to enjoy a holistic learning experience via a hybrid learning model, encompassing both digital engagement and face-to-face learning experiences.
e-KidsExcel@Nee Soon comprises weekly online academic tutoring lessons for 110 Primary 3 and 4 students in either Science or Mathematics depending on the students’ needs. All programme participants were provided with a Samsung Android tablet and a set of device accessories (physical keyboard, protective cover and stylus) together with 50GB of monthly mobile connectivity to facilitate their participation in the online lessons. The tablet is the main learning device through which the students are attending weekly online live-teaching classes conducted by trained teachers from Viva Kids. In addition, digital learning resources based on the Ministry of Education’s syllabus framework and Viva Kids uniforms were also provided to the students.
To create a more holistic learning experience, the students will also participate in the Fullerton Academy programme – The Fullerton Hotel Singapore’s flagship corporate social responsibility initiative designed to help under-resourced children gain learning opportunities in the fields of hospitality. Through Fullerton Academy sessions which are curated and led by staff from The Fullerton Hotels Singapore, participants of the e-KidsExcel programme can enjoy interactive workshops including the opportunity to acquire culinary skills from Fullerton Chefs, and to learn about The Fullerton Hotels and Resorts’ sustainability efforts through experiential excursions to the Fullerton Farm.
Cavaliere Giovanni Viterale, General Manager of The Fullerton Hotels and Resorts said, “We look forward to fostering confidence and creativity in the students through our fun and holistic Fullerton Academy learning programmes. My team and I are delighted to support the growth and development of the children through the mentoring workshops.”
As part of the sponsorship, NTFCF and The Fullerton Hotel Singapore are also supporting the students’ involvement in coding workshops conducted by coding education centre, Empire Code, and bi-annual sports leagues organised by Catch Them Young charity (subject to COVID-19 regulations and measures).

Ng Teng Fong Charitable Foundation and Sino Group Launch Six-Month Meal Donation Programme to Provide Care and Immediate Assistance to the Community
Ng Teng Fong Charitable Foundation and Sino Group Launch Six-Month Meal Donation Programme to Provide Care and Immediate Assistance to the Community
The livelihoods of people, especially the less-resourced in the community have been impacted by COVID-19. In view of the need for immediate assistance, Ng Teng Fong Charitable Foundation and Sino Group (the ‘Group’) jointly launched a six-month meal donation programme (the ‘programme’) in collaboration with community partners. It is expected to distribute over 60,000 hot nutritious meal boxes to individuals and families in need in Hong Kong.
The community partners supporting this programme include Pei Ho (Ming Gor) Charity Foundation, The ABM Hong Kong Swatow Baptist Church Community Service Association, People Service Centre, J Life Foundation, and International Church of the Foursquare Gospel Hong Kong District. The service areas cover districts in Kowloon and the New Territories, including San Po Kong, Sham Shui Po, To Kwa Wan, Tuen Mun and Shatin.
Running from April till the end of October, the six-month programme will create job opportunities in transport and logistics, adding to the support from the Group’s volunteer team.
Mr Daryl Ng, Director of the Ng Teng Fong Charitable Foundation and Deputy Chairman of Sino Group, joined Sino Caring Friends in distributing meal boxes to the beneficiaries. ‘I have known “Ming Gor” and Ms Elli Fu of J Life Foundation since they won awards at our annual Spirit of Hong Kong Awards. I really respect and have been deeply touched by their selfless dedication to helping the less-resourced in their own and practical way – their vision of serving the community is in the same spirit as ours at Sino Group. I am glad to join them this week, with my wife Charis, in serving the community through this very meaningful programme. COVID-19 has affected the local economy and livelihoods of many people in an unprecedented way, and the less-resourced communities need help in basic needs like hot meals more than ever. In this critical period, we need to pull together to care for each other while the situation improves with vaccination roll-out and economic activities picking up,’ shares Mr Ng.

Beginning in late April, nutritious meal boxes, prepared by chefs of Sino Hotels and Pei Ho Counterparts operated by ‘Ming Gor’ Chan Cheuk-ming in Sham Shui Po, are distributed by Sino Caring Friends, the Group’s volunteer team, and NGO partners to the needy individuals and families, as well as the elderly across Hong Kong. The meal boxes are carefully designed to cater to the nutritional needs and health of the beneficiaries, they will also be delivered to homes of senior citizens with disabilities.
‘Labour Day also reminds us to appreciate the contribution of workers and extend our care to people on the frontline during this testing time. We are grateful to our like-minded partners on this meal donation programme to promote the spirit of caring and giving, and to call on society to unite and provide immediate, practical assistance for those in need. I would like to sincerely thank our partners in this programme for connecting us to the less-resourced, and to our own Sino volunteers for their dedicated services to the community,’ adds Mr Ng.
Resonating with the Group’s commitment to serving the community, colleagues are encouraged to participate in community programmes during office hours for at least one day a year through the Volunteer Incentive Scheme.

Witness the Transformation of Two Great World Cities through ‘Photographs from the 1950s: Marjorie Doggett’s Singapore, Lee Fook Chee’s Hong Kong’
Sino Plaza, 1 April – 30 May 2021
Sino Group (the ‘Group’), together with Ng Teng Fong Charitable Foundation (‘NTFCF’), and supported by the Consulate-General of the Republic of Singapore in Hong Kong, jointly present the exhibition Photographs from the 1950s: Marjorie Doggett’s Singapore, Lee Fook Chee’s Hong Kong curated by the Photographic Heritage Foundation (‘TPHF’). The public exhibition at Sino Plaza will open on Thursday, 1 April 2021 until Sunday, 30 May 2021.
Ms Foo Teow Lee, Consul-General, Consulate-General of the Republic of Singapore in Hong Kong remarks: ‘This exhibition is significant for two reasons: First, it allows us to bring a slice of Singapore and Singapore history to our friends in Hong Kong, even as we eagerly await the launch of our Air Travel Bubble, and the resumption of physical travel. I am grateful that art and photography allow us to transcend time and geography. On that note, I think it is a very meaningful experience to see Hong Kong through the eyes of a Singaporean son – Lee Fook Chee. Second, Singapore and Hong Kong have always shared close and warm relations. Hong Kong is home to one of the largest groups of overseas Singaporeans in the world. We have strong economic and people-to-people ties. This exhibition highlights the cultural aspects of our exchanges. Through the photography that defined both cities in the 1950s, we hope to showcase what we both share in our art, cultures and storied histories. My hope is that this exhibition will spark more opportunities for education and cultural exchanges, and bring our two cities even closer together.’
Ms Nikki Ng, Group General Manager of Sino Group and Director of Ng Teng Fong Charitable Foundation shares: ‘This heritage photo exhibition carries much meaning for Sino Group and the Ng Teng Fong Charitable Foundation, as our family business started in Singapore in the 1960s, created by our late grandfather and the founder of Sino Group, Mr Ng Teng Fong, before he came to Hong Kong, incorporating our first company in this city, 50 years ago. This exhibition celebrates the shared history and heritage between these two great world cities of Asia, and we are delighted to present an enriching and educational event for the community and the public to enjoy. This collection of beautiful historic photos brings us through the journey of time, where East meets West, where modernity meets tradition, and reminds us of the passion for travel between Hong Kong and Singapore.’
The exhibition presents works by Marjorie Doggett, a pioneer female photographer who captured the cityscapes and buildings of Singapore with photos taken between 1954-1957, and works from Lee Fook Chee, a self-taught photographer who focused on streetscapes and automotive of Hong Kong during the same period. This ‘time capsule’ exhibition aims to showcase the parallel timeline of the 1950s in Hong Kong and Singapore, and the rich shared history between the two cities.
For viewers, Marjorie Doggett’s and Lee Fook Chee’s photographs, taken over half a century ago, present vivid portraits of Singapore and Hong Kong during the defining 1950s, which was a pivotal time of transformation for both cities. At the exhibition, viewers will see photographs in their historical and architectural context, such as images from 1950s Des Voeux Road, Central District and Hennessy Road, to the Cheung Chau Waterfront, rice growing in the western alluvian plain and a Hakka village in the New Territories. These appear alongside photos from 1950’s Singapore, including The Fullerton Building from Clifford Pier’s archways, the Raffles Institution, the characteristic godowns along the Singapore River, and the 19th century buildings at Collyer Quay. Many of the memorable landmarks capture the glory of the times, making their works an invaluable record.
The exhibition has been curated by photographer and photographic historian Mr Edward Stokes, who specialises in presenting Asian photographs taken in the mid-twentieth century with texts that reflect each photographer’s life and times. In 2019, Mr Stokes, NTFCF and the NUS Press Singapore published a book – Marjorie Doggett’s Singapore, featuring many of Doggett’s previously unpublished photographs, and a photographic exhibition was held in collaboration with The Fullerton Hotel Singapore and The Arts House showcasing Doggett’s masterpieces in the same year.
Mr Edward Stokes, exhibition curator and Founder of The Photographic Heritage Foundation, shares: ‘Following the success of the Singapore exhibition in 2019, it is an honour to bring this expanded exhibition to the people of Hong Kong, showcasing Marjorie Doggett’s works alongside Lee Fook Chee’s, creating a beautiful contrast between two of Asia’s greatest cities, and celebrating the life legacies of the two photographers in a cohesive and impactful storyline’.
The exhibition will also be accompanied by a series of free curatorial and educational tours for visitors and schools, available upon registration, introducing the history, architecture, iconic buildings and urban transformation of the two cities. Following the exhibition at Sino Plaza, a roving exhibition with highlights of the collection will take place between April to June across the city including at The Pottinger Hong Kong in Central, Lee Tung Avenue in Wan Chai, Royal Pacific Hotel in Tsim Sha Tsui, Citywalk in Tsuen Wan and Olympian City in West Kowloon. Donation of RMB 100 million to the Palace Museum
The Ng Teng Fong Charitable Foundation has donated RMB100 million to the Palace Museum to support heritage research and conservation of the Palace of Prolonging Happiness (Yanxi Gong) as well as the establishment of a gallery of foreign artefacts. The signing ceremony of the donation was held at the Palace Museum in Beijing on 2 March 2019; it was graced by the Honourable Mrs Carrie Lam, Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region; Mr Luo Shu-Gang, Minister of Culture and Tourism of China; Mr Zhang Xiao-Ming, Director of Hong Kong and Macau Affairs Office; Mr Wang Zhi-Min, Director of the Central Government’s Liaison Office in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region; Mr Liu Yu-Zhu, Director of the National Cultural Heritage Administration; Dr Shan Ji-Xiang, Director of the Palace Museum and other esteemed guests.
Yanxi Gong is one of the Six Eastern Palaces in the inner zone of the Forbidden City. It was built in 1420 during the reign of Emperor Yong-Le (1403-1424) of the Ming Dynasty, and has served as the residence of court concubines during the Ming and Qing Dynasties. During the reign of Xuantong (1909-1911), construction of a western-style, three-storey building was initiated on the site of Yanxi Gong. Named Lingzhao Belvedere (also known as Crystal Palace or the Hall of Water), it is the only western-style building in the Forbidden City. The building was built on white marble foundation with cast-iron hexagonal pavilion structure, it was adorned with intricately carved white marble façade and coloured porcelain tiles. The construction illustrates cultural exchanges and how traditional Chinese form of arts and architecture blends with Western style. Yanxi Gong was converted into the warehouse of antiques of Palace Museum in 1931. It will house the Gallery of Foreign Artefacts after restoration.
Mr Robert Ng, Chairman of the Ng Teng Fong Charitable Foundation and Chairman of Sino Group, said at the signing ceremony, ‘The Palace is China’s national treasure. It epitomizes the highest level of traditional Chinese architectural prowess as well as Chinese philosophy and art. The Belt and Road Initiative not only entails hardware like infrastructure, it also aims to promote Chinese culture and exchanges with other countries.’
Mr Daryl Ng, Director of the Ng Teng Fong Charitable Foundation and Deputy Chairman of Sino Group, said, ‘China is one of the earliest civilisations, it is important for us to safeguard cultural heritage. We are honoured to have the opportunity to support restoration of such a unique landmark. Lingzhao Belvedere of Yanxi Gong is the only Western-style building in the Forbidden City, it retains the Chinese culture while harmoniously blending in Western architecture. This remarkable example of East-meets-West, created in the Forbidden City more than 110 years ago, shows that China has been open to different cultures. The Belt and Road Initiative continues this spirit, and promotes cultural development with other countries. The donation will be used to support restoration of Yanxi Gong. After restoration, the palace will be an attractive destination for visitors and for those who want to better understand Chinese culture. More importantly, exchange programmes and workshops will be offered to Hong Kong youths to help them appreciate the value and craft of the Forbidden City first-hand.’
The signing ceremony was graced by the Honourable Mrs Carrie Lam, Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region; Mr Luo Shu-Gang, Minister of Culture and Tourism of China; Mr Zhang Xiao-Ming, Director of Hong Kong and Macau Affairs Office; Mr Wang Zhi-Min, Director of the Central Government’s Liaison Office in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region; Mr Liu Yu-Zhu, Director of the National Cultural Heritage Administration; Dr Shan Ji-Xiang, Director of the Palace Museum and other esteemed guests.
